Problem
The Lafitte Corridor follows the path of the buried Carondelet Canal. Publicly owned but underused, it is a no man’s land that cuts across the city and divides neighborhoods.
Proposal
The project makes a public link between the French Quarter and Bayou Saint John. Recreational spaces are designed to withstand flooding during storms, and the corridor’s drainage capacity is increased by a surface channel that supplements existing water infrastructure. The corridor is planted with Moso bamboo, a wetland plant with economic value: its rapid growth rate means that 20% of the bamboo forest can be harvested each year.
